Troparion (Tone 4)
Thy holy martyr Alban in his struggle has
gained the crown of life, O Christ our God; for strengthened by
Thee and with a pure heart he spoke boldly before worldly judges,
giving up his sacred head to Thee, the Judge of all.
St. Alban was a nobleman in Hertfordshire, England. During a persecution, a priest fled to his house for refuge. Though a pagan, Alban took him in. He so admired the the priest's faith that he was instructed in the Faith and baptized by the priest. Before the officers came to search his house, Alban exchanged clothing with the priest in order to allow him to escape and continue his ministry. While going with the guard to the place of execution, Alban led him to faith. The governor assigned another executioner to slaughter them both. He was struck blind when he severed St. Alban's head. St. Alban was martyred in 304 and is known as the Protomartyr of England. The village where he lived is now known by his name.
