Our Lady
of Walsingham
September 24th
Troparion
Hail, O Virgin Theotokos! As thou didst
receive the Good News of salvation at Gabriel's appearing and
didst by thine own appearing at Walsingham cause the Holy House
to be raised up as an everlasting remembrance of that same
mystery of salvation, pray that we may ever bear in our souls
Jesus whom thou didst bring forth, the Saviour of mankind.
In 1061, Lady Richeldis de Faverches, lady of the manor near the village of Walsingham, Norfolk, England, was taken in spirit to Nazareth. There the Theotokos asked her to build a replica, in Norfolk, of the Holy House where she had been born, grew up, and received the Annunciation of Christ's birth. She immediately did, constructing a house according to the plan given her. Its fame slowly spread, and in 1150 a group of monks built a priory beside it. The shrine was burned and looted in the 1500's as it was caught in the middle of the Protestant revolution. This icon is based on an impression from the original seal of the shrine, which survived that fire. Today, there is a national shrine there which includes a Russian Orthodox chapel and plans for an Orthodox Church within the complex.
This icon is by the hand of Henry Shirley.
