October 12th
Troparion
(Tone 4)

Though in the flesh thou wast zealous to emulate the choirs of heaven, and whilst on earth didst compose hymns to God in the highest; like a harp of holy wisdom thou didst hymn in enlightenment God the Word. O divinely inspired Cosmas, we praise thee with hymns.

St. Cosmos was born in Jerusalem and was a friend of St. John of Damascus, whose parents took him in when he was orphaned. He helped the Damascene compile the Octoechos (Eight Tones) and composed many canons to the Saints. The Canons for Lazarus Saturday, Palm Sunday, and the Sunday of the Judgement are ascribed to him. He was Bishop of Maiuma, near Gaza. He is also known as St. Cosmos the Hymnographer.
His scroll reads: "Christ is Born! Let us Glorify Him!"

This Icon is by the hand of Constantine Youssis and is at St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, New Kensington, Pennsylvania. It is one of six hymnographers in the choir loft there.
