Saint Dominica the Righteous
January 8th Troparion (Tone 4)
Love for Christ illumined thy mind, and thou didst shine in
asceticism like a radiant lamp, O Dominica hence the Lord
revealed thee as a lampbearing guide of monastics in life and
word. Intercede with him O Godbearer, that all may be saved.
Saint Dominica came from Carthage to Constantinople with
four girlfriends, not on spiritual pilgrimage, but to take in the
cultural amenities of the imperial capitol as a 25 year old
woman. What they found was a deeply spiritual and lively
Christian community. They all embraced the gospel of Christ and
were baptized by Patriarch Macarius. He blessed them to live as
nuns. The name Dominica means "belonging to the Lord"
and she served the Lord tirelessly for 75 years. She reposed at a
great age in 474. She holds in her hands the Cross of martyrdom,
because of her life lived in service. She holds her right hand up
and open as if to say No to the world and its passions.
("Dominica" is the latinized form of
"Kyriaki" or "Cyriaca".)
