O blessed Menas, thy struggles have proved thee a martyr of Christ. Thou wast radiant with grace and didst shine forth with healings for all.

St. Menas was an Egyptian soldier. He so detested the pagan practices of the time that he left the army and the town, preferring to live with the wild animals on a mountain to pagan human society. One day, Menas saw in his spirit a pagan festival in the town of Cotyaeus from afar. He went into the town and openly professed Christ. Pyrrhus, the ruler, upon hearing this, arrested Menas and tortured him with whips and iron flails. Then they beheaded him and burned his body to prevent the Christians from taking it. They managed to rescue some relics from the flames and buried them with care. Later, his remains were moved to Alexandria. Many miracles were performed through Menas' prayers during his life on earth and ever since. He has often appeared as a soldier on horseback to help Christians or deliver them from their oppressors. He was martyred in about 304.
