Prophetess Miriam
December 17th
Troparion (Tone 2)
Verily we celebrate the memory of thy Prophetess Miriam. Through her we implore thee, O Lord, save our souls.
Prophetess Miriam was the sister of Prophet Moses. When it was decreed by the Pharoah that all male Hebrew infants were to be killed, the mother of Moses asked Miriam to hide Moses by the river. Moses was placed in a basket and set afloat on the river among the brush. This is why the Prophet Moses is shown as an infant in a basket in Prophetess Miriam's arms in this icon. St. Miriam was there when the Pharoah's daughter found the infant Moses and decided to adopt him. She also suggested that the Pharoah's daughter take on her mother as a nurse for Moses. St. Miriam composed a victory song about the miracle at the Red Sea.
This Icon is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. It is from St. Michael Orthodox Church in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
