St.
Antipas
April 11th
Troparion (Tone 1)
Let us honour myrrh-giving Antipas, Martyr
and Hierarch of Pergamos, the healer of toothache. Let us cry to
him: Glory to Christ Who has glorified thee; glory to Him Who has
crowned thee; glory to Him Who through thee works healings for
all.
St. Antipas was mentioned in the Book of Revelation (2:13): "Antipas My faithful martyr, who was slain among you where Satan dwelleth." That is, the city of Pergamum, where those who killed Christians were accounted as doing a civic service. Demons appeared in dreams and visions to the pagan priests and soothsayers of the city telling them how they were so afraid of Antipas that they were fleeing the city. So they seized Antipas and tortured him to force him to deny Christ and worship their idols. He said to them: "When your so-called gods and lords of the universe are afraid of me, a mortal man, and have to flee the city, why do you not learn from this that your faith is in vain?" This only made them more irrationally angry. They heated up a cast bronze ox in front of the temple of Artemis until it was red hot. They then threw the Bishop inside it. He was seen and heard praying peacefully for his flock and for the world until he finally died of exhaustion. This was in the year 92.
