Troparion
of St. Monica
In your mercy, Lord, you received the tears of Holy Monica as she wept for her son. Through the intercessions of both mother and son, give us grace to weep for sin and obtain your forgiveness.

St. Augustine lived a life of rebellion and immorality despite the teachings and prayers of his godly, widowed mother, St. Monica, until he did a complete turnaround at age 31. He repented and accepted the instruction and Baptism from St. Ambrose. Monica reposed just after Augustine's conversion. His life is recorded in his Confessions. It is a wonderful work testifying to the life-transforming power of the Gospel. He is considered a Doctor of the Church, however some of his teachings have led to a false view of human nature. He is still venerated as a Saint in the Orthodox Church, not for his teachings, but for his godly life and faithful service as Bishop of Hippo for 35 tumultuous years. Those who deny his status as a Saint because of the fruit of his teachings in the Roman Church are confused; as they are using a Roman, not an Orthodox standard of sainthood. Orthodoxy never claimed infallibility for Popes or Saints. This icon found in stained glass is a testament to the efficacy of the persistent prayers of a mother for her wayward son.

The stained glass window is from St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, Upper Darby, PA. We offer it as a laminated print on wood.
