Troparion (Tone 4)
Today, we faithful come to the divine and all-wondrous icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, who gives believing hearts to drink of her mercy from the heavenly chalice of non-intoxication, and to believing sould reveals wonders. Therefore, seeing and hearing, we rejoice in spirit and cry out in joy: O most merciful Sovereign Lady, heal our infirmities and passions, praying to Christ our God, and entreat that He would save our souls.

This Icon portrays one of the mysteries and paradoxes of the Orthodox faith. Mary is at the Altar, where no woman can serve, offering Christ in the Eucharist. The truth is that Mary is always present at the Holy Table. God cannot become human flesh except through the womb of the Theotokos and her willing cooperation or synergia with God. Her hands are upraised and she is looking at us, calling us home to Eucharistic fellowship in the Body of Christ. This icon is particularly powerful to break the bonds of alcoholism and other addictions. There is an akathist service that was written by a drunkard to gain deliverance.
