Since thou art a well-spring of tenderness,
O Theotokos, make us worthy of compassion; Look upon a sinful
people; Manifest thy power as ever, for hoping on thee we cry
aloud unto thee: Hail! as once did Gabriel, chief Captain of the
Bodiless Powers
The three golden stars which adorn her mantle, one above the forehead and one on each shoulder, signify her virginity before, during, and after giving birth. She is portrayed in deisis, that is in a position of intercessory prayer to Christ. Chist's hand of blessing appears from heaven.
This Icon is 12th Century Georgian. It is part of a set of three small cloisonne' enamel on gold icons, surrounded with pearls on the top of the Khakhuli Triptych icon of the Theotokos. The other two in the set are Christ Enthroned and The Forerunner in Deisis. Inscription in Greek.
