O Great
Among the Saints and Glorious Martyr
George, since you are a deliverer of captives and a defender of
the poor, a doctor for the sick and a noble attendant to kings:
intercede with Christ God, that He may save our souls.
George, a Tribune in the Roman Army, tore up in defiance an edict of Emperor Diocletian ordering the persecution of Christians. The Emperor put him in prison with his feet in stocks and a great weight on his chest. Then he had him bound on a wheel and rolled over large spikes. Then he buried him neck deep for three days. Then he was given deadly poison. George remained constant in his faith and was immediately healed from all these injuries, to the wonder and consternation of all who saw. He even prayed for another who had been killed and the man was raised to life. This caused many more to believe, including the Emperor's wife, Alexandra, and the chief pagan priest, Ahanasius, along with the governor and three noblemen. The foolish Emperor stubbornly held on to his false religion and commamded that both George and Alexandra be beheaded. St. Alexandra reposed in the Lord on the way to the scaffold. Two days later, April 23, 303, George was beheaded. He is portrayed as a warrior, and a valiant warrior he is. His weapons are love and faith. With these he conquered the powers of darkness and he was saved along with a multitude around him. God continues to show his grace in this beloved Saint to this day, granting miracles, comfort and deliverance to those who honor him and invoke his name.
