Four Liturgists
St. James of
Jerusalem, St. Basil the Great, St. John Chrysostom St. Gregory
Dialogos
From the Anaphora
Let us stand aright; let us stand with
fear; let us attend, that we may offer the Holy Oblation in
peace.
These four Saints had liturgies named for
them in the history of the Church, as they were the ones
responsible for developing or authoring four different texts.
Three of these liturgies are still used: St. John Chrysostom's is
used most of the time. St. Basil's is used ten times during the
year, mostly during Great Lent. St. Gregory is responsible for
giving us the Pre-Sanctified Liturgy which is used on Wednesdays
and/ or Fridays during Lent. The only part of St. James' liturgy
to survive to the present day is the "Let all Mortal Flesh
Keep Silence" hymn to be used in place of the Cherubim Hymn
for the Great Entrance on Lazarus Saturday.
Their scrolls contain phrases that they contributed to the
Liturgy.
Saint James of Jerusalem: "Let all mortal flesh keep
silence."
Saint Basil the Great: "Be mindful, O Lord, of thy holy,
catholic and apostolic church."
Saint John Chrysostom: "I will not speak of thy mystery to
thine enemies."
Saint Gregory Dialogos: "Now the powers of heaven invisibly
worship with us."
These icons are by the hand of Nicholas Papas. They are on the East wall at St. Philip's Antiochian Orthodox Church in Souderton, PA.
