Ss. Rastislav and
Boleslav
St. Rastislav - January
13th
St. Boleslav - March 16th
St. Rastislav was Prince of Great Moravia
from 846 to 870. He sent to Constantinople for teachers of
Christianity. Ss. Cyril & Methodius were eventually sent.
Part of the motivation for this was to counter the encroachments
from the Franks to the west. However, he fully embraced the
Faith. The introduction of the alphabet and written Slavonic did
much to advance not only the gospel, but learning and culture in
general. Rastislav was captured and blinded by Carloman, King of
Bavaria.
St. Boleslav was King of Bohemia or Czech from 967 to 999. He was
the son of Boleslav the Cruel, a pagan who had murdered his own
brother, St. King Wenceslaus. By contrast, Boleslav was known as
"the pious". He oversaw the conversion of the Czech
people, then sent missionaries to establish the Faith in Hungary
and Poland.
