Saint John
Priest-Martyr
of Chicago
October 31st
Troparion (Tone 1)
Aflame with love for God, You gave your life as a
martyr for Christ and neighbor. For this you received a crown of
righteousness from Him. O Hieromartyr John, Entreat the Most
Merciful God to preserve the Holy Church in peace and save our
souls.
A priest in Chicago, Fr. John Kochurov returned to Russia for its All-Russia council, which elected St. Tikhon patriarch. At the same time, revolution swept the country. While in Russia, St. John attempted to calm a mob of revolutionary sailors. They killed him brutally in Tsarskoye Selo (near St. Petersburg) on October 31, 1917. Holy Confessor Patriarch Tikhon said of John: "adorned with a martyr’s crown, the reposed pastor now stands before the throne of God among the chosen faithful of Christ’s flock." He was the first of many clergyman to be martyred under the Bolsheviks in Russia. He was buried in a crypt in St. Catherine's Cathedral which was later demolished.
