February 3rd
Troparion
(Tone 4)

O holy st. Nicholas, the Enlightener of Japan, you share the dignity and the throne of the Apostles: you are a wise and faithful servant of Christ, a temple chosen by the Divine Spirit, a vessel overflowing with the love of Christ. O hierarch equal to the Apostles, pray to the life-creating Trinity, for all your flock and for the whole world.

St. Nicholas went to Japan in 1861, to serve as chaplain to the Russian consulate in Hakodate. He converted over 50 people to Christianity while the religion was still outlawed. When Christianity was legalized in 1872, he set up a mission in Tokyo. By 1878 there were over 4,000 Japanese Orthodox and Nicholas was consecrated their bishop. He built many churches, a cathedral, a seminary, a nursing home and a press. During the Russo-Japanese War, he remained loyal to his flock and became archbishop in 1908. He reposed February 3, 1912.

This Icon is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. It is from St. Philip Antiochian Orthodox Church, Souderton, PA.
