The
Lamentation
Holy Saturday
St. Joseph
of Arimathea
July 31st Troparion
The Noble Joseph when he had taken down Thy Most
Pure Body from the tree wrapped it in fine linen and anointed it
with spices and placed it in a new tomb. But on the third day
Thou didst rise, O Lord, granting the world great mercy.
This Icon is late Byzantine from the early 15th century. The original is at St. Katherine's Monastery in Sinai. It is called the Epitaphios or burial cloth. During the Lamentation Matins which takes place late on Friday evening of Great Week, this icon embroidered on a cloth is held over the heads of the congregation as they process back into the Church. It touches the head of each believer, thus reminding each of us of our Baptism when we were buried with Christ.
