The Mystical Supper
Great and Holy Thursday
Troparion (Tone 8)
Of thy Mystical Supper, O Son of God, accept me today as a
communicant; for I will not speak of thy Mystery to thine
enemies, neither will I give thee a kiss as did Judas; but like
the thief will I confess thee: Remember me, O Lord, in thy
Kingdom.
This icon shows Jesus eating his Last Supper with the Twelve Apostles. it was during this meal that He distributed the Holy Mystery of Communion, giving them bread (his body) and wine (his blood) for the first time. Peter, the Chief Apostle, sits at Christ's right hand. On the other side of Christ si his Beloved Disciple John, laying his head on Christ's breast. Judas is shown with his face turned, with one eye unseen, to symbolize his dishonesty as he reaches to dip his hand in the bowl (as Christ said the one who was to betray Him would do).
This Icon is by the hand of Constantine Youssis and is from St. Philip's Antiochian Orthodox Church, Souderton, Pennsylvania.
