Initiates
of Heaven and teachers of
divine truth, you faithfully tended the Church of Christ, Holy
Alexander champion of the Trinity, John the son of grace and Paul the
crown of bishops. Together we all praise you.
St. Alexander was a bishop during the time of Patriarch Metrophanes. He attended the Ecumenical Council at Nicea representing the patriarch in 325. Patriarch Metrophanes chose St. Alexander to follow him as patriarch of Constantinople upon his death. Once during a dispute with a pagan, St. Alexander exclaimed, "In the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ I command you to be quiet!" and the man became mute. Only after making motions indicating that he believed in the True Faith was his voice restored. The heretic Arius was punished through the prayers if St. Alexander. Arius deceived St. Constantine into setting a date for him to be received into the Church. St. Alexander, knowning that Arius was a deceiver and a heretic, prayed that this would not happen. On the day Arius was to be received, his bowels burst and he died. St. Alexander died in the year 340 at the age of 98.
