July 4th
Troparion
(Tone 1)

Most noble and sublime was your life and death, O Sovereigns; wise Nicholas and blest Alexandra, we praise you, acclaiming your piety, meekness, faith, and humility, whereby ye attained to crowns of glory in Christ our God, with your five renowned and godly children of blest fame.  Martyrs decked in purple, intercede for us.

Alexandra was the grand-daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and wife of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia.  She was the mother of Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei.  After her marriage to Nicholas, she devoted herself to prayer.  During her travels expected of her by royal duties, she always brought Orthodox icons to accompany her.  Nicholas, hoping to never to actually rule Russia, focused on family instead of national affairs.  Though Nicholas and Alexandra cared deeply for Russia, they were ill-equipped to handle the firestorm of godless communism that came against them during World War I.  During the Bolshevik Revolution, Nicholas and Alexandra were forced to give up their thrones and all power and were imprisoned.  St. Alexandra was shot in the head as she was blessing herself with the sign of the cross and moments after they killed her husband.  Nicholas and Alexandra, along with their five children, loyal servants of the house, and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth were eventually all shot, pierced with bayonets, burned, and dismembered.  Their bodies were tossed down a mine shaft, where those that were still living, died.  They reposed on July 17, 1918.

This Icon is by the hand of Paul Drozdowski.
