Alexander Schmorell was born on Sept. 16, 1917 in Orenburg, Russia. His mother died of typhus when he was two. In 1921, his family fled the Bolsheviks, moving to Munich, Germany. In 1938, he was conscripted into the national labor service, then into the military. In 1939, he began medical studies in Hamburg, then returned with his student corps to Munich. There he met Willi Graf and Hans Scholl. He and Hans worked together to produce the first four anti-Nazi leaflets that they published under the banner of "The White Rose." The second leaflet was an outcry against the Holocaust. In June 1942, Alexander, Hans and Willi and Jürgen Wittenstein served as medics together on the Russian front. They were sickened by the treatment that he witnessed of prisoners of war and civilians.Alexander continued his studies in Munich. In 1943, he and Hans wrote the fifth leaflet, Appeal to All Germans!, which called for the immediate overthrow of Hitler's regime. He was in Austria distributing the leaflet when members of the group were arrested and executed. He was trying to escape to Switzerland, but was arrested on Feb. 24, 1943, the day of Hans and Sophie Scholl's and Christophe Probst's funerals. His letters from prison assured his family that he was at peace and was not fearful of death. He was executed along with Dr. Kurt Huber on July 13, 1943 at the Munich-Stadelheim Prison. He is not universally glorified yet, but is revered in the Russian Orthodox community of Munich, where he is buried. Holy Passion Bearer Alexander pray to God for us.
