Most
noble and sublime was your life
and death, O Sovereigns; wise Nicholas and blest Alexandra, we praise
you, acclaiming your piety, meekness, faith, and humility, whereby ye
attained to crowns of glory in Christ our God, with your five renowned
and godly children of blest fame. Martyrs decked in purple,
intercede for us.
Alexei was the great grandson of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and son of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and Alexandra. He was the first Boy Scout in Russia. He is depicted here in his Boy Scout uniform. Though Ss. Nicholas and Alexandra cared deeply for Russia, they were ill-equipped to handle the firestorm of godless communism that came against them during World War I. During the Bolshevik Revolution, Nicholas and Alexandra were forced to give up their thrones and all power and were imprisoned. St. Alexandra was shot in the head as she was blessing herself with the sign of the cross and moments after they killed her husband. Nicholas and Alexandra, along with their five children, loyal servants of the house, and the Grand Duchess Elizabeth were eventually all shot, pierced with bayonets, burned, and dismembered. Their bodies were tossed down a mine shaft, where those that were still living, died. They reposed on July 17, 1918.
