Saint
Alexander of Svir
August 30th
Troparion (Tone 4)
Thou didst settle in the wilderness from thy youth
eager to follow Christ's footsteps, O Alexander. The Angels were
amazed when they beheld thee struggling in the flesh and
conquering onslaughts of passions. Dwelling on earth thou wast
equal to the Angels. Pray to Christ our God to save our souls.
Alexander was born of pious parents near Novgorod and was a very slow learner, until a heavenly visitation healed him of his handicap. Having a wish to live a hidden life in Christ from a youth up, he entered into the monastic life and later into the wilderness. Many gathered with him there and formed a hermitage, seeing that his life was lived with such consistent ascetic labors and was considered by others as an angel living in the flesh. One day outside of Alexander's cabin a light from heaven appeared on him and three men in bright, white garments came down from it. Having realized who these three men were, he bowed down in fear and reverence to them. When this took place, the Lord cried out to him, "Have hope, O blessed one, and do not fear ... for the Holy Spirit has been pleased to dwell in you because of the purity of your heart." Saint Alexander reposed August 30, 1533.
