The Revolution: A Field Manual for Changing Your World, Edited by Heather Zydek,
last chapter by Cranford Joseph Coulter, owner of "Come and See" Icons, Books & Art
Book Summary:
A revolution is happening in our generation. We see the
strife in the world as generations before ours could not—whether a terrorist
attack or a tsunami, we watch the devastation of such tragedies play-by-play,
and it moves us. But how do we apply our energy to alleviate the suffering of
those around us? Especially when we’re busier than ever and less able to give of
our time to serve just causes at home and around the globe?”
The Revolution will equip socially conscious
twentysomethings to fight against the world’s top 10 most pressing social
justice issues. Twelve narrative articles written by experts in their respective
fields will inspire young adults to take action on local, national and
international levels—using heavenly, God-ordained weapons of charity, love,
peace and willful self-sacrifice to serve others. Using the richness of our
talents (knowing that even though only God can eradicate all the world’s ills in
His time) while we’re here on this earth, we can each fulfi ll His ultimate
command to love and serve our neighbors.
That is the publisher's blurb. Although it was written and assembled with young adults in mind, I don't think it is that age specific. It is written with a positive, take action mindset. It is different from most socially conscious, Christian books that were aimed at me when I was twentysomething, however; in that, it is much more focussed on producing action than on producing guilt. - CJC

- The Iconography of St. Philip Antiochian Orthodox Church, Pascha
2004 edition, by C. Joseph Coulter
This is the completely revised, expanded and updated 80 page booklet that contains the troparia and stories for the iconography at St. Philip's. It includes black & white photos of the icons. There are stories for more than 80 individual saints plus all the major feasts of the Church. There is a brief introduction to Orthodox worship and the use of icons. The book is written to act as a guide for a detailed tour of the icons. It also includes the intertwining themes of the Liturgy of the Word, the Liturgy of the Eucharist and the inexhaustible love of God. This is the latest edition, and the first one available for sale to the public, of the booklet that launched "Come and See" Icons, Books & Art. (See Joseph's Page) It provides a glimpse at one way to illumine a church. St. Philip's has taken its time, working with iconographer Nick Papas, to develop a cohesive plan. The book includes sketches of some of the icons yet to be installed. All of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to cover the cost of production, with any excess going to the further illumination at St. Philip.

It says it is "Illustrated for Children", but it's too beautiful to let the little tikes touch with unwashed hands. This is definitely a book that parents will want to read to their children.

There are alot more connections between the Testaments in the art by Niko Chocheli than in the texts selected by Fr. Thomas Hopko. A keen eye and a thorough knowledge of the Old Testament will bring this book to life. Examine each spread with the question in mind: "Why did Niko include that?"

A Perfect Christmas
In this mystical and
beautiful story, told in the classic manner of an Orthodox
Russian folk tale, past and present collide as a modern child
meets the real "St. Nick." At the heart of this
wonderful contemporary Christmas parable is a tale of compassion,
shared love and family with a little of the real Saint Nicholas'
life woven in, just enough to whet the appetite of the reader for
more! The pages of A Perfect Christmas glow with the
warmth of a bygone era when Christmas was filled with the mystery
of the Incarnation, simple shared love, and grace.

The hero is a boy named Nicholas who at first does not understand why his mother will not let him dress up as a goblin and trick-or-treat with the other kids. It is when he remembers his mother's instructions, he is able to rescue the other children from the clutches of the evil Halloween Spirit and get out of Halloween Town. It is lavishly illustrated with fantastical dark landscapes and monsters as well as bright icons.
