Obituary:
Gail Kathleen Scholtens was born on January 1, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. She was raised in LA by her parents Herman and Florence, and her beloved "Uncle" Edward, a close family friend. She enjoyed many years with her older brothers John and Bud until they moved out on their own. Her favorite pastime was rollerskating around the streets of Westchester. In 1961, at the age of 17, Gail moved from Los Angeles with her parents and Edward to a little cabin in Brookdale as her family built their home in Ben Lomond. While in the Santa Cruz area Gail attended Cabrillo College where she met her husband Clifford Buckner and after their second date they were never apart. Clifford proposed to Gail while he was away at school and they were married at Calvary Episcopal Church, in downtown Santa Cruz on September 5, 1964. When Cliff finished college (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA) they moved to Seattle where Cliff worked for Boeing and Valerie and Marianne were born. After Boeing they moved to Los Alamos, NM for two years and then back to the Santa Cruz area where they stayed for 31 years. They were founding members of Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Ben Lomond, CA. For many years Gail worked in many different areas including miniature sculptures and painting. She traveled around the US to miniature shows taking turns having her daughters travel with her. She worked as an optician for ten years and passed the trade on to her daughters who are still using these skills today. After graduating with her Bachelors degree from St. Mary's College at the age of 50, Gail went to work for the County Santa Cruz in the business office and Health Services Dept.. In 2003 she retired from the county to care for her mother, Florence Scholtens, in the final year of her life. Gail was a strong and loving woman who gave her heart and soul to everything she did. Gail was a true artist in every sense of the word. Whatever project she decided to undertake became a masterpiece with her touch. In 2004 Gail and Cliff moved to Bethlehem, PA to live near their children and grandchildren. In the last five years Gail was able to use her talent to preach the word of God through her Icons and art. She had a great love for God, her family and her friends. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
