Muromskaya Ryazanskaya
Troparion
Since thou art a well-spring of tenderness,
O Theotokos, make us worthy of compassion; Look upon a sinful
people; Manifest thy power as ever, for hoping on thee we cry
aloud unto thee: Hail! as once did Gabriel, chief Captain of the
Bodiless Powers
The first icon of this composition was brought from Kiev to Murom (a town in Russia) by Prince Konstantin in the 12th century to aid in the evangelization of the pagans there. In the 13th century, Bishop Vasily of Murom was unjustly accused of sin and his life threatened. He fled by night with the icon. He spread his cloak upon the water of the River Oka and stood on it. He miraculously floated upstream to Staraya Ryazan, where he and the icon were warmly welcomed. The feast day for this event and of the icon is April 12th.
This Icon is by the hand of Arlene Tilghman.
