August 31st
Troparion
(Tone 8)

You have shown yourself, O God-inspired Cyprian, as a guide to the Orthodox faith, a teacher of true worship and purity, O star of the universe and companion of the bishops, O wise one. Through your light you have enlightened all, O harp of the Spirit. Therefore, intercede with Christ God to save our souls.

Cyprian was an orator and teacher of rhetoric who converted to Christianity around 245. He soon became a priest and then bishop of Carthage in 248. During the Decian persecution, he fled the city, but ruled and encouraged his flock by letter. After the persecution he reconciled many who had renounced the faith, through his compassion and insistence on church unity, loyalty and obedience. The church was of such primary importance to him, that he said, "He cannot have God for his Father who has not the Church for his Mother." During a second persecution, under Emperor Valerian, he was exiled and martyred in 258.

This Icon is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. It is from St. Philip's Antiochian Orthodox Church, Souderton, PA.
