Troparion (Tone 2)
Great are the accomplishments of faith; for the three holy youths rejoiced in the fountain of flames as though at waters of rest. And the Prophet Daniel appeared a shepherd to the lions as though they were sheep. Wherefore, by their pleadings, O Christ God, have mercy upon us.

Daniel belonged to the tribe of Judah and was of royal blood. He was taken captive to Babylon in 605 B.C. with the three youths: Hananiah, Azariah and Mishael. Given the name Belteshazzar, he rose to the position of governor of Babylon, but remained faithful to the Law of Moses and devout in his worship of the true God. Falsely accused by his enemies, he was thrown into a lion's den, but was miraculously preserved. His book is the last of the four major prophets. His three companions were thrown into a fiery furnace when they refused to worship an image of the king. They were untouched by the flames and stood singing a beautiful hymn to the Lord, who walked with them in the flames.
