March 12th

Troparion (Tone 3)
Thou didst excellently dispense the Word of God, endowed with discretion of speech, O Hierarch Gregory: for by thy life thou didst set the virtues before us, and dost radiate the brightness of holiness. O righteous Father, pray to Christ our God to grant us His great mercy.

In his hands is a scroll which reads: "Now the powers of heaven invisibly worship with us." This icon commemorates St. Gregory's contribution to the development of the Liturgy. He composed the services for the Wednesday and Friday Pre-Sanctified Liturgies that are celebrated during Great Lent. He was extremely generous to the poor. When the former Pope died, they wanted to make Gregory pope, but he fled and tried to hide. His hiding place was supernaturally revealed and he was elevated to the bishopric. He reposed in 604.

This Icon is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. It is on the East wall of St. Philip's Antiochian Orthodox Church, Souderton, Pennsylvania.
