Holy Martyrs Davit and Tarichan
May 18th
Troparion
O Holy Saints Davit and Tarichan, honorable martyrs of
the Christian Faith, pray to Christ, Who has crowned you, to have mercy
on our souls!
Ss. Davit & Tarichan were brothers born to the pious Vardan and Tagine, relatives of the king. Vardan died when the brothers were young. Theodosius, Tagine's pagan brother, seized the family's assets and tried to convert them to his beliefs. They boldly refused. Tagine, sensing some evil from Theodosius, fled with her sons to the south. Theodosius found his nephews through his spies and ordered an ambush. Ss. Davit and Tarichan saw the soldiers before they attacked. St. Davit, seeing his uncle, ran toward him to embrace, but Theodosius stabbed him before they could embrace. St. Davit dropped his staff and when it fell to the ground it was transformed into a large tree. Upon seeing his own brother murdered before his eyes, St. Tarichan ran toward the village of Divri for help. His murderers overtook him and stabbed him to death. Theodosius was struck blind immediately after St. Tarichan's death. His band of soldiers were stunned and seemingly affixed to the place for they could not speak or move from the place of this miracle. Theodosius wept with bitter tears and was moved to repentance. Upon learning of what her brother did, Tagine denounced Theodosius and wept inconsolably. While Tagine was thus weeping over the lifeless bodies of her sons, Theodosius professed the True Faith and begged for forgiveness. When Tagine heard his profession, she realized that her sons were martyrs for the Faith and forgave her brother. She took a piece of earth soaked with the blood of St. Davit and anointed his eyes with it and his sight was restored. All of this happened in the year 693. Theodosius erected a church in honor of St. Davit. The mayor of Divri took the relics of St. Tarichan and built a church over them in his name.
