(Tone 4)
O blessed Father Herman of Alaska, North star of Christ's holy Church, the light of your holy life and great deeds guides those who follow the Orthodox way. Together we lift high the Holy Cross you planted firmly in America.  Let all behold and glorify Jesus Christ, singing his holy Resurrection.

St. Herman of Alaska was a monk from the monastery of Valaamo, who came with other Russian missionaries to Alaska in 1794. He worked tirelessly for over 40 years with the native people, who buried his body on Spruce Island when he reposed in 1837. He was known for his powers of healing and for his great piety and hospitality. He baptized St. Peter the Aleut. He was the first Orthodox Saint formally canonized in the New World (1970). In this icon, St. Herman is feeding an ermine.  Ermine are native to Alaska and are known to be rather destructive and ill-tempered in the wild.  St. Herman feeds this animal with no fear, confident of the protection of God.

This Icon is by the hand of Lasha Kintsurashvili of the Republic of Georgia.
