Saint
Irina
May 5th
Troparion (Tone 1)
Christ our God has called thee Irina, for
thou grantest peace to those who hasten to thy church with hymns.
Thou dost intercede for all before the Light-creating Trinity.
Together we celebrate thy memory as we magnify God Who has
glorified thee.
Saint Irina lived in the Balkans in the first century. Some say she was Persian, but the Slavs and the Serbs claim her too. She was baptized by St. Timothy. When she converted to Christianity her father sought to have her put to death, but instead was himself converted by her. Four different kings, other than her father persecuted and tortured her for her faith. No matter what they did, they could not kill her. More that 10,000 pagans were converted to Christianity by her preaching and through witnessing the grace of God upon her while she was suffering torments. She finally laid herself in a grave and commanded Appelianus to close it. Four days later, they opened the grave and her body was not in it. Thus, God honored Irina by translating her body to the kingdom of Heaven. The Emperor Justinian built a magnificent church in Constantinople in her honor. The name "Irina" means peace in Greek. The inscription on this icon is in Romanian. Irina is the same as Irene in English.
This Icon is by the hand of Dorin Marian Orzetic of Romania.
