Martyrdom of Saint IgnatiusMartyrdom of St. Ignatios

December 20th
Troparion
(Tone 4)

O Holy Hieromartyr Ignatius, you lent yourself to the Apostles' way of life and succeeded them on their throne. Inspired by God, you found the way to contemplation through practice and prayer; wherefore you became a perfect teacher of truth, fighting for the faith unto the shedding of your blood. Intercede with Christ God that He may save our souls.

Of Syrian origin, Ignatius became Bishop of Antioch about 59 A.D. Little is known of his life before his last journey on foot from Antioch to Rome, where he was to be executed for being a Christian. On his way, many churches sent representatives out to talk with him. He encouraged them in their faith and strengthened the churches, sending letters back to them. Seven of these letters survived, (thanks to St. Polycarp) in which he urged unity among Christians through the Eucharist and the local bishop. In his letter to the Romans, he calls himself Theophore (God-bearer), so convinced was he of the presence of Christ within him. He was thrown to the lions in the Coliseum on December 20, 107 during the reign of Emperor Trajan.

This Icon is from central Russia in the 17th century. It is now at the Patriarchate of Antioch, Damascus, Syria.
