St.
Job of Pochaev
October 28th
Troparion (Tone 4)
Acquiring the patient endurance of the long-suffering forefather, emulating the
abstinence of the Baptist, and sharing in the divine zeal of both, thou wast
vouchsafed worthily to receive their names, and wast a fearless preacher of the
true Faith. Wherefore, thou didst lead a multitude of monks to Christ, and didst
confirm all the people in Orthodoxy. O Job our venerable father, pray thou that
our souls be saved.
St. Job was born in Ukraine in 1571. He joined the Ugoinitsky Monastery at age ten and was tonsured as a monk at age twelve. At the age of thirty, St. Job was ordained as a priest and was appointed as abbot of Pochaev Monastery. St. Job utilized the printing presses that were available to him at the monastery. He made available Orthodox literature to anyone, not just those that could afford it. St. Job was an author of many works defending the Orthodox Faith. He fought against the heresies of many Protestant sects that were threatening the faithful in west-Russia. He was a great ascetic. It is said that he would hold vigils so long that his feet would bleed and a holy light would shine forth from the cave where he prayed. He reposed peacefully on October 28, 1651.
