St. Joseph
December 31st
Troparion (Tone 1)
Verily, Joseph the betrothed, saw clearly
in his old age that the foresayings of the Prophets had been
fulfilled openly; for he was given a strange earnest, receiving
inspiration from the angels, who cried, Glory to God; for he hath
bestowed peace on earth.
Joseph was of the royal lineage of David, but was a simple carpenter. He was an old man and widowed, when he took the Virgin Mary into his home. He is referred to as "the betrothed" because his marriage to the Theotokos was never consummated. She remained ever virgin. He is portrayed with the two turtledoves that were offered at the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. According to the Law of Moses, if one could not afford a lamb, one could sacrifice turtledoves. St. Joseph reposed before Jesus began his public ministry.
