June 24th
Troparion
(Tone 4)
O Prophet and Forerunner of the coming of Christ, we honour thee lovingly but cannot extol thee worthily; for by thy birth thy mother's barrenness and thy father 's dumbness were unloosed; and the Incarnation of the Son of God is proclaimed to the world.

John was the son of Zachariah, a Temple priest, and his wife, Elizabeth, the cousin of the Theotokos. He was born when his parents were advanced in years, after a prophecy by an angel. Zachariah was told by the angel that he should name his son John and he could not speak until after John was born. This is portrayed in the icon by Zachariah writing "John" on the tablet.

This Icon is by the hand of Constantine Youssis and is at St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church, New Kensington, Pennsylvania.
