Saint
Methodios
May 11th
Troparion (Tone 4)
O Cyril and Methodios, inspired by God, by your
life you became equal to the Apostles. As Teachers of the Slavs,
intercede with the Master of All, that he may strengthen all
Orthodox people in the true faith, granting peace to the world
and great mercy to our souls.
Born in Thessalonica in the ninth century, these brothers were ordained priests in Constantinople, where Cyril had served as the librarian at Hagia Sophia. Methodius, the elder brother had spent ten years as an officer among the Slavs in Macedonia. When the Khazar king requested Christian preachers from Emperor Michael, he commanded that these brothers be found and sent. They went and converted a great number of people, starting with the king and many of the nobles. Returning to Constantinople, they compiled the Cyrillic alphabet in order to translate the Liturgy into Slavonic. Prince Rastislav invited them to Moravia , where they continued their evangelistic work and defended the use of the vernacular in the Liturgy. The Pope invited them to Rome. Cyril died there on February 14, 869. Methodius returned to Moravia to continue ministry. He reposed on April 6, 885.
