Saint Owen of Lichfield
March 4th
St. Owen was prime minister to Queen St. Etheldreda, whom he served with distinction. He resigned his position and gave away all his possessions to the poor, except an axe and a hatchet. He went to the Lastingham Monastery, where Bishop St. Chad received him. Owen showed Chad his tools offering to work hard with his hands for the monastery. When the other monks were called by the bells to their studies, Owen would set to work, offering his manual labor as prayer to God. He followed St. Chad to Lichfield, where they both served the poor. St. Owen reposed on March 4, 680. The people of Lichfield immediately proclaimed him a Saint for all of his humble service in their midst.
