Saint
Photios the Great
February 6th
Troparion (Tone 5)
As a radiant beacon of wisdom hidden in
God, and a defender of Orthodoxy revealed from on high, O great
Photius, adornment of Patriarchs, thou dost refute the
innovations of boastful heresy, O light of the holy Church,
preserve her from all error, O luminary of the East.
St. Photios was a relative of the Emperor and grandson of Patriarch Tarasius. He protected the Church from the attempted domination of the Pope and Latin heresies. He passed through the ranks from layman to Patriarch in six days at Christmas, 858. He reposed in about 895.
