(Tone 3)
O holy Apostle Philip, intercede with our merciful God to grant our souls forgiveness of sins.

Philip was born in Bethsaida, as were Peter and Andrew. Philip heeded Christ's call immediately. (John 1:43) When some Greeks wanted to meet Jesus, they approached Philip first. It was Philip who asked Jesus to show them the Father. Our Lord replied, "He who sees me, sees the Father." While Philip was evangelizing Asia Minor, some Jews wanted to kill him for preaching the Gospel, but as they approached him, they were struck blind, then the earth opened and swallowed them up. We know St. Philip preached in Athens and English legend claims that he went as far as the coast of France, sending Joseph of Arimathea across the channel to England. St. Philip returned to Phrygia (now Turkey) and worked for the Gospel with John the Theologian, his own sister Mariamna and the Apostle Bartholomew. The pagans of Hierapolis woshipped a snake, which Philip destroyed by prayer as though by a spear. This enraged the pagans, who then crucified Bartholomew and Philip upside-down. The earth opened up once again to swallow up these pagans. The people rushed to take the Apostles off of the crosses. Bartholomew survived, but Philip had already breathed his last.
