The Chains of St. Peter, January 16th
Troparion
(Tone 4)
Thou didst come to us without leaving Rome by the precious chains which thou didst wear. O first-enthroned of the Apostles, we bow down to them and pray: By your prayers to God grant us great mercy.

The faithful kept the chains of Saint Peter which the angel released him from (Acts 12:7) and they worked miraculous healings. St. Juvenal, Patriarch of Jerusalem, gave them to Empress Eudocia (exiled wife of Emperor Theodosius the Younger). She, in turn, cut them in half and sent half to Holy Apostles Church in Constantinople and the other half to her daughter, Empress Eudoxia, wife of Valentian of Rome. Eudoxia built the Church of St. Peter in Rome and placed these chains and the chains that Nero had bound him with in that church.

This Icon of the Apostle Peter is from Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Windber, Pennsylvania. It is one of a set of three that are on the outside of the church. It is by the hand of Nicholas Papas.
