Saint
Phanourios
Troparion (Tone 4)
A heavenly song of praise is chanted radiantly upon the earth; the company of
Angels now joyfully celebrateth an earthly festival, and from on high with hymns
they praise thy contests, and from below the Church doth proclaim the Heavenly
glory which thou hast found by thy labors and struggles, O glorious Phanourios.
St. Phanourios' life and time is mostly a mystery. We do not know when or where he came from. The saint's icon was discovered in a demolished church. It was the only icon found not destroyed in the ruins. What we do know has been gathered from that icon. We know that he was a soldier and a martyr that suffered ten different tortures before he entered into Glory. He was beaten with stones, flogged, stripped and beat with iron hooks, imprisoned, burnt with candles, bound to a rack, cast in with wild beasts, crushed with a large rock, made to hold burning coals in his hands, and finally thrown into a fiery furnace. St. Phanourios has been accredited with many miracles, including the emancipation of slaves.
This is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. The icon is from St. George's Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral in Oakland, PA.
