Saint
Philip the Deacon
October 11th
Troparion (Tone 3)
Filled with divine grace thou didst serve
in the Church as a deacon of God the Word, O Apostle. By the
working of miracles and signs from God thou didst enlighten the
multitudes of Samaria. O blessed Philip, entreat Christ our God
to grant us His great mercy.
St. Philip the Deacon is also referred to as Holy Apostle Philip. This has caused some to mistakenly confuse Holy Apostle Philip, one of the Twelve Apostles, and the Deacon chosen in the Book of Acts (6:5). Deacon Philip was born Ceasarea in Palestine. He and his wife had four daughters who were vowed virgins for Christ (Acts 21:8-9). These are perhaps the earliest examples of Christian monastics. He served the poor in Jerusalem until persecution drove him into Samaria. There he preached the Gospel with power and authority, driving out demons and performing many miracles. He was miraculously translated to bear witness to and baptise the eunuch of Queen Candace of Ethiopia. An angel then bore him away to Azotus, where he baptised and discipled many (Acts 8). He was later ordained as Bishop of Tralles, where he died in great old age.
This Icon is by the hand of Constantine Youssis. It is from St. Michael's Antiochian Orthodox Church, Greensburg, Pennsylvania. It is on the North Deacon's Door.
