Troparion
(Tone 4)
Thou didst blossom as a scion of righteousness from a barren mother, O great Prophet Samuel. Thou didst reveal beforehand the blessings we should receive; from childhood thou didst serve the Lord in the priestly office. As a prophet thou anointedst kings; ever remember those who acclaim thee.

Samuel was born to Hannah after a lifetime of barrenness and tears in prayer. He was dedicated to the Lord and trained by the chief priest. He is considered the last of the Judges and anointed Israel's first two kings, Saul and David. This is why he is portrayed with the horn of anointing. Samuel organized and led a school for the Prophets.
