Saint Simeon Metaphrastes
November 9th
Troparion (Tone 4)
The barren wilderness thou didst make fertile
with the streams of thy tears; and by thy deep sighing thou hast given
fruit through thy struggles a hundredfold. Accordingly, thou hast
become a star for the universe, sparkling with miracles.
Therefore, O righteous Father Simeon, intercede with Christ God
to save our souls.
Not much is known about St. Simeon Metaphrastes. Historians are fairly certain that he lived during the second half of the tenth century. He served as a civil servant, but became a monk in his later years. He compiled a ten volume Menalogian of saints' feast days in the order of the church calendar year. He also wrote several prayers, poems, and letters. His banner reads: "O Thou who givest me thy flesh as food, Thou who art fire that consumes the unworthy burn me not O Creator; but consume the thorns of my sins. Show me to be the dwelling place of Thy Spirit alone."
