Saint Simeon
the
Brother of Christ
April 27th
Troparion (Tone 1)
O Simeon, we acclaim thee as a kinsman of
Christ, great Hierarch and steadfast Martyr. Thou didst destroy
error and keep the Faith. Today as we celebrate thy memory we
receive forgiveness of sins through thy prayers.
St. Simeon is the son of Cleopas who is St. Joseph the Betrothed"s brother. So in our terms, he would be the cousin of Jesus Christ. But in the Middle East there is a higher regard for kin beyond the nuclear family, so he is called a brother. Simeon witnessed the miracles of Jesus, so he followed Him and was sent out as one of the Seventy apostles, and converted many in Judea. When St. James the Brother of the Lord was martyred by the unbelieving Jews, who threw him down from the Temple and beat his head with sticks; Simeon succeeded him as Bishop in Jerusalem. (That is why you see him holding that church in his arm.) He served wisely and faithfully for many years. Then Emperor Trajan instituted a persecution in Palestine against the descendants of David and against Christians. St. Simeon was condemned on both counts. He suffered severe torture and was finally crucified. That is why he is holding a Cross. He was more than 100 years old when he joyfully suffered for the Lord.
