(Tone 3)
Guide to the paths leading to life, you were also the first enthroned teacher. Since you came first, Bishop Sava, you evangelized your fatherland, giving birth to it by the Holy Spirit, and planted it as an olive tree in the mystical paradise. Honoring you as equal to the Apostles and bishops, O Holy Father, entreat Christ our God to grant us great mercy!

St. Sava was the heir to the throne of Serbia, but ran away secretly to Mount Athos where he became a monk. When his father finally found him, he gave up his throne and wealth, and came to join Sava on the Holy Mountain. Together they founded the Serbian Chilandari Monastery on Athos. Sava served as the first Archbishop of Serbia, having gained autocephaly for the Serbian Orthodox Church. He was known as a great teacher and peacemaker among his people. He reposed in 1236.

This Icon is by the hand of Nicholas Papas. It is from St. Philip's Antiochian Orthodox Church in Souderton, PA.
