(Tone 4)
Strengthened by the power of faith, thou didst contend for Christ our god, O glorious Tatiana. Thou didst endure every affliction and by thy courage put Belial to shame. We beseech thee to deliver us from the power of the evil one.

The Holy Martyr Tatiana of Rome was a Deaconess in the Church and from a prominent family. She served the poor in the Name of the Lord. For this, she was led to martyrdom by the wicked advisors of Emperor Alexander. She prayed for her executioners and their eyes were opened to see four angels around her. Eight of them were converted to faith in Christ, and were subsequently tortured and killed. The remaining guards tortured Tatiana and used various means to try to inflict as painful a death as possible upon her. They flogged her and cut parts off of her; even sawing her with an iron saw. Each night God's angel visited her and healed her wounds. She would appear in perfect health the following morning. Instead of renouncing paganism and coming over to the winning side, her defeated torturers became all the more enraged. She was thrown to a roaring lion, who acted like her gentle house pet. They cut her hair thinking that there might be some magical power in it. She was finally led out and beheaded along with her father. The Prologue says: "She had the weak body of a woman, but a manly and valiant spirit." But few men have so graciously endured what she did in service to Christ. She entered into rest in the Lord in 225.
