Saint
Vladimir
July 15th
Troparion
O holy prince, Vladimir, you were like a
merchant in search of fine pearls. By sending servants to
Constantinople for the Orthodox faith, you found Christ, the
priceless pearl. He appointed you to be another Paul washing away
in baptism your physical and spiritual blindness. We celebrate
your memory asking you to pray for all suffering Christians of
Russia, and for us your spiritual children.
Grand Prince of Kiev, Vladimir was known for his cruelty and paganism before his conversion to Christianity. He learned of different faiths and decided to send envoys to examine them. They attended a service at Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and brought back the report that they didn't know whether they were on earth or in heaven. This inspired him to be baptized and to have all the people baptized. He smashed the idols and had churches built. He married Anne, daughter of Emperor Basil II. He entered into rest in the Lord in 1015.
